Matinée des Jeunes Etoiles IV

03.08.2024 , Saturday

Myth and legacy of sound at the same time: Which violinist wouldn’t dream of playing on one of the legendary instruments crafted by Giuseppe Guarneri? This exceptional honour is bestowed upon the victors of the prestigious “Premio Paganini” competition in Genoa – the list of winners has showcased the biggest names in the violin world since 1956, from Salvatore Accardo and Isabelle Faust to Jean-Jacques Kantorow, Victor Pikaisen, Gidon Kremer, and Leonidas Kavakos. On October 27, 2023, the next name was added to this illustrious list: that of the young German violinist Simon Zhu, who will grace the stage in Gstaad playing the 1743 ‘Il Cannone’ Guarneri – a violin that gained notoriety as the favoured instrument of the virtuoso Niccolò Paganini. So, in addition to Beethoven and Schumann, one essential name must not be omitted on the programme: Paganini … who else?
