THEASTER GATES & THE BLACK MONKS

Theaster Gates will be joined by his music ensemble, the Black Monks, to offer an experimental performance responding to the vessel, the voice, and the monastic possibilities anchored in Gates’ artistic investment in and exploration the sonic imaginary.
The music of the Black Monks is rooted in the Black music of the South, including the blues, gospel, and wailings, coupled with ascetic practices, related most closely to Eastern monastic traditions. The Black Monks are an important performative experiment around the specificity of Black sound in Gates’s practice.
The event is part of the opening weekend of Elevation 1049: Energies.
