“Dall’ Inferno al Paradiso” – Trans-cendence X

The London Symphony Orchestra has become synonymous with some of the most breathtaking performances of the past two Festival decades. This year’s concerts with the globally renowned ensemble and Sir Antonio Pappano will seamlessly blend into the tapestry of unforgettable moments. In the first of the two programmes, the London Symphony Orchestra, joined by soloist Vilde Frang, will delve into a rarely heard piece that fittingly carries a distinctly “British” flavour: Elgar’s Violin Concerto, known for its challenging technical journey that always makes room for nostalgic tones. Adding to the musical journey, the LSO will also perform Gustav Mahler’s monumental Symphony No. 1, famously titled “The Titan”. Legend has it that during its premiere in Weimar in 1894, the symphony took the audience “from hell to heaven” ... but, as with any great event, a bit of patience is required! After the initial two movements, the famous funeral march follows, echoing the world’s misery and lamentations. The finale commences like “the sudden eruption of despair from a deeply wounded heart” (in the composer’s own words), ultimately building to a triumphant climax.
